SPORTSMAN'S PARK

Sportsman's Park
St. Louis, Missouri
Resembling a painting more than a photograph, this is an artistic view of Sportsman's Park, circa 1947. It's likely a Cardinals game, not the lowly Browns who shared these confines and rarely attracted such large crowds. The park dates back to 1902. It was expanded in the mid-1920s to its 30,000+ capacity, but further improvements were not forthcoming until 1948 (likely motivated by a Browns-hosted All-Star Game) and in 1953-54 under Anheuser-Busch - a 1.5 million renovation that featured a name change to Busch Stadium.
