KANSAS CITY MUNICIPAL STADIUM

Home of Kansas City baseball, 1923-72

Following a three-month reconstruction hampered by bitter cold and winds, during which a second deck was added, the vintage 1923 Muehlebach Field was transformed from a Negro League and American Association venue into a major league ballpark and opened to an overflow crowd on April 12, 1955.  Transplanted from Philadelphia, the new hometown A's defeated the Detroit Tigers, 6-2.  Former President Harry Truman threw the first pitch; Hall-of-Fame slugger Jimmy Foxx was among the spectators.  Also transplanted was the scoreboard, which arrived from Boston's Brave Field.  The Athletics called Municipal Stadium home through 1967, until moving west to Oakland.  the AL expansion Royals took up residence in 1969-72 before completion of the Truman Sports Complex.

Unused (3 1/2" x 5 1/2") postcard from a photo from the Kansas City Public Library Photo Archives.
