Tiger Stadium

Detroit, Michigan

She's gone.  The last remnants of Tiger Stadium fell to the wreckers and were trucked away in early fall 2009.  The Tigers baseball team had long since completed their 87-year tenure at Michigan and Trumbull avenues in Sept. 1999 and moved downtown to new Comerica Park.  In years that followed, gallant efforts were made to save Tiger Stadium, previously declared an historic site by the State of Michigan and listed on the National Register.  Ultimately, preservationists lost.  Demolition began in March 2008, was halted for a time by a judge's order, then resumed for good in June 2009.  "It's sad of course, but I have a feeling that the people of Michigan are going to keep Tiger Stadium in their hearts and souls and minds," reflected Ernie Harwell, the "voice" of the Tigers for 42 years.
