Ballpark Nostalgia Postcard

Sportsman's Park / Busch Stadium

St. Louis, Missouri

Remembering the old stadium at Grand and Dodier.....the words of St. Louis post-Dispatch columnist Dan O'Neil:
* "There were bad seats at the old park because of the steel support columns.  But the overhanging grandstands and the opera house feel made for classic baseball atmosphere.
* "The light sequence of the bird swinging the bat and the ball sailing across the board.
* "Home runs: Remember those?  They sailed over the pavilion roof, off the Longines clock, into the shrubs in centerfield, out on Grand Boulevard, off the Budweiser eagle, into the bleachers and over the scoreboard.  They made for wonderful stories.
* "Bat rack: It was on the outside of the dugout.  Fans could watch Stan "The Man" Musial pick out a bat, look it over and then stride over to the on-deck for the resin rag.  With the game on the line, it was a wonderful touch of drama."
