Product Description

MEMORIAL STADIUM

2010-01

They played football on this site beginning in the 1920s. The baseball Orioles (International League) had their own ballpark. This changed after July 3, 1944, when Oriole Park burned and the team needed a home. The horseshoe-shaped venue on 33rd street, then called Municipal Stadium, was pressed into service on a makeshift diamond. In 1949-50, the city began a rebuilding program that concluded in 1954 when Baltimore made its debut in the American League. Renamed in honor of those "who valiandy fought and served in the World Wars," the stadium housed the NFL Colts through 1983 and the Orioles to 1991. During the 1990s it was redegated to temporary-home status for several sports teams. Amid some protest, Memorial Stadium was razed in 2001. Much of the remnants were used to build an artificial reef in Chesapeake Bay. Four senior apartment complexes now occupy some of the site - in right field.
