EBBETS FIELD

Brooklyn, New York

Workers install remaining seats in the bleachers beyond third base prior to opening day 1913.  The Dodgers were about to move their home games from Washington Park to these new grounds in Flatbush, formerly a land-filled marsh occupied by a few shantles with a dump in the middle.  Club owner Charles Ebbets bought the blighted property and constructed the ballpark for a reported $750.000.  Initial capacity was listed as 18,000. (Seating would eventually be increased to about 31,500.)  The first game was played here on April 9, as the Phillies won, 1-0.

Unused 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" standard size postcard from a photo from an unknown source.
