The Coliseum has a long standing history as a hockey venue. The building was home to the University of Wisconsin Badgers Men's hockey team from the 1967-68 season to the 1997-98 season.

The Coliseum was also home to two minor league hockey franchise teams. The Madison Monsters played on the Coliseum ice from their inaugural season in 1995-96 until 1998-99 before moving to Knoxville, Tennessee to become the Knoxville Speed. The Madison Kodiaks, part of the UHL, had their inaugural season in the Coliseum in 1999-00 before moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan to become the Kalamazoo Wings.
