Ballpark Nostalgia Postcard

Texas League Spurs, 1965-71

When the Washington Senators relocated to Texas in 1972 (to become the Rangers), they played in an enlarged ballpark that first housed the Class AA Texas League Spurs.  The expansion of Arlington Stadium was sort of make-it-up-as-we-go.  The park was built initially with 10,600 seats, but with plenty of expansion.  Throught the years, capacity ballooned to 41,000+.  For all of its 22 seasons in the major leagues, all seating was confined to a single-deck.  Sight lines were good, but there was no protective roof - and with the playing field hollowed out in a bowl 40 feet below "ground level," that made for some pretty intense Texas heat.  Speaking of heat, there was no shortage when fans-favorite Nolan Ryan was pitching.  The Rangers' first Hall-of-Famer completed his 277-year career here.
